How to correctly
identify the facing of your home
Step 1: Stand at the entrance door of your home
facing outside (as if you’re going out of your home). Step 2: Record the
direction you are facing, using a compass, while you are in the position
mentioned in step 1 and there you are, the direction that you have just noted
in step 2 is the direction your house faces.
If while coming out of your home, you face North
– then you have a North facing house; similarly if you face South while coming
out of your home, then you have a South facing house.
North, South, East, West are four main direction
and 4 sub-directions North-East, North-West, South-East, South-West. The 4
sub-directions have a lot of priority and importance in vastu shastra as they
are the ones where the bedroom, kitchen, living room, guest room etc. must be
placed in your home. The point is that you need to not only identify the
direction that your house faces but also all the 4 sub-directions to make your
home a vastu compliant one.
North
North is the most prominent cardinal direction
in Vastu Shastra and recognized as favourable after East. North is opposite
direction of South and seems perpendicular to East and West. The significance
of North in Vastu is due to its sacredness where all positive energies reign
and surrounds that is why Northern sides of home or factory are recommended to
leave open.
North is ruled by Lord Kubera- God of wealth and
Vastu says to keep this side open so as to raise inflow of wealth, success and
riches. Vastu has immense significance for two cardinal directions i.e. East
and North because both the directions have implicitly linked with divine
energy. North is again highly charged direction with positive vibration which
it absorbs from cosmos to instill in the surroundings.
North is the essence of life and any
construction should be done according to Vastu because any defect in North or
wrong construction can lead to slow growth, more expenditure than earnings,
women problems and loss of wealth. Northern sides of a plot should be left open
and more space should be given in the balcony if ideal entrance of plot is
North.
According to Vastu, the more the open space in
North and North-east, the more the presence of riches and harmony in a living
place. Therefore, North should not be obstructed by any heavy weight or even
any construction should be avoided as it can hamper the health, wealth and
success of occupants.
South
South direction is the direction governed by
Lord of death- Yama, and therefore some in-auspiciousness is linked with this
direction which certainly makes it unfavorable direction. Although South direction can yield good result akin to North direction, but one has to be
cautious while constructing specific place in South as Vastu rules out some
particular sections in this direction.
South entrance according to Vastu is
inauspicious but is not bad as no living place or other place can be perfect or
Vastu compliant. While only South entrance is not considered inauspicious as
such, but it is the entire orientation of the plot or house which decides
factors of auspiciousness in house. Although there are some repercussions of
South entrance but if this direction is utilized efficiently and effectively
then nothing can cease to bring prosperity, success, and riches in living
place.
Vastu lays down some norms and set of rules
pertaining to every direction which is necessary to follow. One should not
prejudice regarding South direction plot on the raged rumours that South
direction plots are not good and bring downfall of occupant. Every direction is
suitable, provided if it is constructed in the ideal & effective manner.
There are specifically some areas or section which is prohibited in South
direction according to Vastu, for instance Septic tank, kid’s room, living room
and guest room.
To make most out of South direction plots, it
advisable to follow Vastu instructions so that the negative effects get nullify
or balanced with energies with placement of proper room.
East
East is the governing direction of solar deity-
Sun god and most significant direction in Hindu cosmology from where all
positive energy springs to brighten the earth surroundings. According to Vastu
Shastra there are four cardinal directions recognized as a square and all the
four directions have a conjunction point. East is the foremost direction in
Vastu which is the place of all auspicious energies, that is why East facing
plots are recommended as dwelling place.
The auspiciousness of East direction is
recognized to bring good luck, peace, prosperity, harmony and health by
effectively using the space with Vastu norms. Although not only East direction
alone can bring riches and good health but there are many other factors which
determines the auspiciousness of place. East is the ideal direction for the
construction of living place but inmates can attain the riches of life only
after utilizing the space with Vastu.
East direction has huge significance in our life
because this is ruled by solar deity i.e. Sun god who is the essence of life
and illuminates the world by shining bright. On the other hand East is the most
favourable in the all the four cardinal directions in Vastu Shastra. Being an
important direction and place of positive energies East ancient considers it
the most significant and ideal direction to dwell. Therefore this area should
ideally be left open with more space for sunlight and Vastu suggests having
entrance door in East only.
West
West direction is being ruled by Lord Varun and
governed by element water which is the vital for survival. West is though have
no significance attached with sacredness as it is with East and North but if
West is utilized effectively then it yields incredible results with no
obstruction wealth and health. The significance of West direction is
commendable in terms of over-all prosperity if there are minimal Vastu defects.
West direction is although not favourable
direction yet it is the vital direction for survival being governed by
essential element Water. West induces in occupants attributes of being bold,
energetic, wealth and development. According to Vastu Shastra West direction is
suitable for many specific regions and ensuring any defect can save occupants
from sufferings.
In order to identify all the sub-directions, the
first thing that you need to know is the main directions and that you can do as
I’ve mentioned above. Having marked the main directions i.e. North, South, East
and West here’s the simplest way to mark the 4 sub-directions
1. The
place where the North and East sides meet is the North-East corner, 2. The
point at which the South and East sides meet is the South-East corner, 3. The
corner where South and West meet is the South-West corner and, 4. North-West
corner is the one where West meets North.
North-East corner
Its importance in vastu shastra North East (NE)
corner is the one where the North and East sides meet; NE corner is ruled by
planet Jupiter and water element. Here I must also tell you that Jupiter is
also known as “Guru” and as per vastu shastra a Guru is like God. That’s why NE
is also known as “Eshan” or “God’s” corner.
The NE corner is best suited for a Pooja/prayer
room in a home. However, you can also have a living room in this place also
North East Corner can be a source of water.
Water can be allowed to flow into the house through this corner. Equally, drainage water can be allowed pass
out of the house through this corner.
For instance, a bore-well or deep-well can be
there in the North East Corner area. And
also, the public (Corporation/Municipal Water Supply line can be taken into the
house through this corner. Similarly,
the drainage pipes draining used water may be taken out through this Corner.
For the reason that this corner can be the
source of water, no overhead water tank should be installed in the top of the
house in this corner. This will defeat
the basic concept that Easanya Moola (North East Corner), should be light in
weight or in weight bearing.
There should be adequate opening in this
Corner. The natural universal energy
should be allowed to pass into the house through this Corner.
With the above objective in mind, adequate
openings like Door and Windows should be provided in this corner. It should be
ensured that there is no nearby construction to this corner, which will
obstruct or block the flow of natural universal energy into the house. Even if
one side of the North East Corner (Easanya Moolai) is blocked, at least the
other one side should be open to the air.
South-East Corner
The South East direction lies between South
& East and brings in energy from both these directions. Also, the related
Fire element is "radiant" in nature (as compared to the Fire element
related to the East which is mellower in nature). SE is related to Venus which
represents the female. So the lady of the house may suffer most of the times if
there are any Vaastu defects related to the SE direction.
A door in the SE direction brings in Fire i.e.
anger. It creates an atmosphere of stress and tension in the family. It also
brings in sickness, mostly to an elderly lady if there is one in the family.
Many a times the sickness may be severe enough to make the lady bedridden,
especially when a door located in the SE direction faces the South and other
energies also do not support the lady.
The Fire element of SE is also related to sex
and married life. So if a toilet/bathroom or an underground water body or a cut
is present in SE, it can cause hurdles in getting married or in married life or
in conceiving a child. In case of any water body or a bath room in SE, one of
the daughters may remain unhappy in her married life.
It is observed many times that entry from North
West and underground water body in South East or entry from South East and
water in North West can bring in loneliness or in other words, a man or a woman
may not get married or has to live without a spouse. Not getting married or not
conceiving come under a category of living a lonely life. This NW and SE axis
is very important axis for physical pleasure/sex life and NE and SW axis is
very important axis for stability in life.
The SE is best suited for a kitchen in a home
and having anything else such as bedroom, toilet or living room is a huge vastu
defect.
South-West Corner
South-west direction is the conjunction point or
corner of West and South direction and ideally known as Nairuthi corner it’s
ruled by “Earth” element and “Rahu” planet.
South-west being governed by demon is considered
inauspicious direction for construction particular sections as per Vastu.
However, this direction needs to be balanced with heavy material or weight in
order to balance the energies and to yield good results.
South-west direction has its own significance
which makes it best for master bedroom due to its induced dominant and
leadership attributes. Owner of house is always given with South-west room so
that the person can lead his family well under the control and also this
direction grants good decision making power.
South-west should not be extended or left open
for future results as south-west is heavy direction which has to be balanced
with heavy weight so as to reap good benefits from it. It is considered ideal
for storage, dumping heavy stuff, unused machineries and over-head tank. The
extension of South-west yields negative results to occupants in the form of bad
health, loss of wealth, unnecessary enemies and indulging in escapades etc.
South-west should always be higher than other
directions and must not have any important area such as kitchen or dining room
while this corner must be balanced with heavy weight objects.
North-West Corner
North-west is the corner of Vayu or Air having
induced with attributes of change and move. The direction is one of the
important and vital for all living beings because air is essential for survival
and change. North-West is best suited for a kitchen North-also the alternative
option for making master bedroom after South-west as it helps couple to have
right control over the children.
North-west is associated with the development of
ladies, early marriage of girls and health of offspring that are looked after
by Lord of this direction. Marriageable daughters should only be given
North-west for their early marriage and it is also considered ideal for girls
for many reasons. Well constructed North-west direction prospers the occupants
with happiness, peace and development.
Extension in North-west is regarded inauspicious
as it shortens North-east which can readily harm people of house. To avoid any
repercussion of Vastu defect that may arise due to wrong construction in
North-west direction, it ideal to consider and follow doctrine of Vastu Shastra
to lead better and prosperous life.
